Berkeley

Berkeley’s desirable schools, culture, and community is dynamic and inclusive.

Welcome to Berkeley

Situated directly across from the Golden Gate Bridge, the City of Berkeley with approximately 123,000 residents and the University of California Berkeley as its centerpiece. Berkeley’s desirable schools, culturally diverse, and historically progressive community is dynamic and inclusive. The allure of cornerstone California cuisine, cafes, independent shops, museums, art, and performance centers, is ever-present. Berkeley’s outstanding Mediterranean climate inspires outdoor living; traveling through the tree-lined streets with rich architecture, visiting the beautiful parks, waterside at the Marina, or the hill trails with gorgeous bay views. Convenient to San Francisco, Berkeley’s three BART stations (Ashby, Downtown, and North Berkeley) offers an easy commute to the greater Bay Area.

Prominent neighborhoods of Berkeley include:

Elmwood / Southside / Claremont / The Uplands:

South of the UC campus, the Elmwood commercial district on College Ave. is filled with boutique restaurants, bakeries, shops, and even a local movie theater. Housing styles are inspired by the early craftsman style and architects such as Julia Morgan & Leola Hall with everything from charming bungalows to larger brown shingle foursquares and earlier Victorians and more, At the edge of campus close to Sather Gate, the student-focused promenade of Telegraph Ave, shops, and restaurants bustling with foot traffic and street vendors. Adjacent to the Claremont Hotel and Resort is the Uplands are the more stately architectural homes in Italianate, Spanish-revival, Brown-shingle, and Contemporary styles.

Berkeley Hills:

Rising above North Berkeley and East of the Claremont Hotel, the hills are remarkable for their Bay water views including San Francisco, the Golden Gate, and Marin. Architects Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, Walter Ratcliffe, John Hudson Thomas, and others have built prized homes here among the Spanish revivals, Italianate villas, Craftsman bungalows, and more recent Ranch homes. Tilden Park, Lake Anza for summertime swimming & picnics, holiday highlights at the historic MerryGoRound, animal ambassadors at Little Farm, Golf, Berkeley’s “hidden” footpaths and epic nature trails, and some offering panoramic Eastern views are just a few highlights.

North Berkeley, Thousand Oaks, North and Westbrae:

These neighborhoods, many with tree-lined streets and are extremely walkable with Craftsman homes in Mission, Prairie, Four Square, and Bungalow styles. Access to great parks such as Indian Rock, the Rose Garden at Codornices Park, King Track and Field, and more. Local-centric shopping on Shattuck Ave. or Solano Ave, Gilman, and Hopkins Streets in addition to the weekly North Berkeley Farmers’ Market. A selection of restaurants and eateries all seem relatable in some way to the casual elegance standard set by the hometown favorite, Chez Panisse.

South Berkeley / Lorin District:

Arrive in the South Berkeley Lorin district to find easy access to all points of East Bay and beyond. This historic neighborhood is filled with a mix of Victorians and early Craftsman bungalows on wide streets. The neighborhood’s highlights include cafes, antique shops, the renowned Berkeley Bowl, a weekly Farmers’ market, Sunday open-air street food at the Thai Temple, Berkeley’s Tool Lending Library, and the expansive Grove and San Pablo Parks for tennis courts, local hoops, and playgrounds. The central Ashby BART station-complete with a weekend flea market- offers convenient commuting to San Francisco.

West Berkeley:

Along the waterfront, this urban neighborhood has the dynamic edge of original industry such as shipping, train depots, warehousing, and tanneries which have been reformatted by consistent and popular use into the pulse of the East Bay. Wide residential streets from the turn of the previous century mix with industrial, bio-tech, offices, artists’ Open Studiosbreweries, wine tasting, and upscale 4th Street with independent retail shops & restaurant culture. Modern residential and commercial architecture contrast against Victorians and humble single-family homes in this bootstrap neighborhood.
